Lela Mae Naasz
Lela Mae Harp was born May 24, 1925 to Oliver M. and Wilma L. (Edmunds) Harp at Cedarville, KS. When Lela was in the fourth grade she and her sister, Bess, went to live with their aunt and uncle, Dick and Alice (Harp) Mast in Wichita, KS. Lela graduated from high school in Wichita and started working for Yellow Van Transfer and Storage. She married Richard A. Naasz on March 24, 1945. While living in Pratt, KS where they had their first two sons. In 1951 they moved to rural Alexandria/ Ethan, SD where Richard worked on the farm of his uncle, Otto Hafner. In 1959 they purchased the farm from Richard’s aunt, Adela Hafner. They made this farm their home, operating a large dairy and raising six sons. They retired and moved to Kimball, SD in 1997. In 2005 they entered Bethany Meadows Retirement Center in Brandon, SD. Richard died in November, 2008. Lela entered the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls in September, 2007.
Lela was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD since their move to SD in 1951. She was an active member of the LWML, the Church Choir, and served her Lord however she could. She was a member of the Hanson County Home Extension Club for many years.
Lela was a faithful milker of their dairy cows, spending countless hours in the barn. She loved gardening and canning vegetables; she was an excellent cook and baker, keeping her boys and grandchildren full of her long johns and rolls. She loved to visit with her family around the kitchen table and was the communications center of the family after the boys left home and started their own families.
She is survived by five sons: Terry (Arlene) Naasz of Brookings, SD; Bruce (Carole) Naasz of Brandon, SD; Mark (Margie) Naasz of Hibbing, MN; Paul (Katie) Naasz of Chatham, MI; and Tim (Sandy) Naasz of Platte, SD; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, one son, Kent, and a daughter-in-law, Corrine. Memorials can be given to Main Street Living 1400 S. Duluth Ave. Sioux Falls.
Visitation with family present will be Sunday5:30-6 PM at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Monday, 10 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, Mitchell.
