John Edward Masgai John Edward Masgai, 91, of Sioux Falls, SD, died peacefully on Sunday September 14, surrounded by family at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. John was born March 2, 1934 in Adrian, MN to Frank and Lauretta (Finnigan) Masgai. He graduated from St. Adrian High School in Adrian, MN in 1952. He entered the US Navy, Aug. 13, 1952, serving in Hawaii and on board the USS St. Paul. He was honorably discharged August 13, 1956. He married Barbara Lens on February 9, 1963 at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls January 1965, and began working for the National Park Service in Aztec, NM. He continued working for the NPS; serving at Big Bend National Park, TX, National Capitol Parks, Washington DC, and Grand Canyon National Park, AZ. In December 1977 he began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Aberdeen, SD and continued until his retirement. Upon retirement, John and Barbara moved to Sioux Falls to be near their children and grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, his parents, Frank and Lauretta, and his brothers, Bob and Gene. John is survived by his three children: Deb Masgai of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary (Bernie) Walter of Burnsville, MN, Michael (Martha) Masgai of Crooks, SD; six grandchildren; his brother: Daryl (Betty) Masgai of Grand Haven, MI; sister-in-law: Sandy Masgai of Minneapolis, MN; widow of his late brother Gene; as well as many loving relatives and friends. John will forever be remembered for his gentle nature, his wit and his love of the outdoors. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday, September 25 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with burial to follow at the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery. Tweet |
