Mathilda Balak age 91 died Saturday April 18, 2009 at Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls. Mathilda was born August 28, 1917 to George and Sophia (Zambo) Kormendy on the family farm near Java, SD. She moved to Sioux Falls in early 1940's. Mathilda worked as domestic help for a doctor's family then a brief time at Manchester Biscuit Company. She married Andrew Balak September 26, 1943.The couple had 3 sons. Mathilda loved to garden, bake cookies and sew. She is survived by two sons George (Margaret Straley) Balak, Sioux Falls, SD and Michael Balak, SD, her sisters, Margaret Steinhoff, Pipestone, MN, Anna Hasse, Brookings, SD and Sister Martha Kormendy, OSM, Bruce, WI, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Kenneth John, her brothers Joseph, Lawrence, Kolman, Felix and Emil, her sisters Agnes, Irene, and Ethel. Memorials may be directed to South Dakota Federation of Garden Clubs Scholarship fund. Visitation will be Thursday, 9:30 AM with a Funeral Service at 10:30 AM at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home.
