Maxwell Shilander
07-07-2024

On July 7, 2024 the world lost a bright and compassionate son, brother, grandson and friend when Maxwell Shillander tragically lost his life to addiction and mental illness at the age of 25. Born on December 26, 1998, in Sioux Falls, SD, Maxwell touched the lives of many with his quick wit, generous kindness, and gentle, sensitive soul.

Maxwell struggled valiantly with mental illness for many years, facing challenges that were often invisible to those who knew him only on the surface. He was concerned about his health and had a desire to heal. Despite his battles, he maintained a quirky sense of humor that endeared him to everyone he encountered. His ability to find lightness in any situation and his genuine kindness towards others left an indelible mark on his family, friends, and colleagues.

Maxwell's life was marked by many moments of brilliance and creativity. His curiosity knew no bounds, and he was always eager to learn and explore new ideas. Maxwell was intrigued by the internet and became very skilled with computers and producing electronic music–where his passion shone brightly. He could tell you the molecular structure of chemicals (and their purposes). He typed 90 words per minute with no errors and loved to have us watch him take timed typing tests.

Maxwell leaves behind a legacy of love, silliness, curiosity and resilience. While his time with us was cut short, the memories of his infectious laughter and his genuine concern for others will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His family and friends find solace in remembering his warmth and the profound impact he had on our lives. Maxwell loved his family and his family loved him.

Maxwell Shillander will forever be remembered for his brilliance, his humor, and the enduring kindness he shared with everyone he met. May he find peace in the arms of eternity, free from the pain that haunted him in life.

In honoring Maxwell's memory, let us remember both his bravery in the face of his challenges and the beautiful person he was. May we strive to embody the kindness and compassion he demonstrated and carry forward his spirit in our hearts.

Maxwell is survived by his parents, Mercedes Maltese and Francisco Shillander, and his sister, Francesca Shillander.
