Donald Dunlap 06-18-2026
Donald John Dunlap, lovingly known as “Donnie”, passed away peacefully at the VA June 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, faith, kindness, and patriotism.
Don was born on October 13, 1949, in Columbus, Ohio, to James and Dorothy (Wiggins) Dunlap. He was the third of five children and shared a special bond with his fraternal twin brother, Ronnie. Growing up in a family with a strong tradition of military service, Don developed a deep love for his country. His father proudly served in the United States Navy, and his older brother, Jimmie, served in the United States Marine Corps.
In 1967, Don answered the call to serve his nation by enlisting in the United States Army. As an infantryman, he served honorably during the Vietnam War. His military service reflected the courage, dedication, and sense of duty that would characterize his entire life.
Following his time in the Army, Don worked as a welder for many years. Later, his adventurous spirit led him to travel throughout the country, taking on a variety of jobs. Among these was driving semi-trucks, transporting everything from restaurant supplies to ranch livestock.
Along the way, he experienced many parts of America, a country he deeply loved. One of his favorite places to live was Salt Lake City, Utah. Eventually, he made his home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, often remarking on how beautiful and clean he found the city.
Don found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time fishing, capturing moments through photography, reading Western novels by William W. Johnstone, and watching classic television shows such as The Rifleman and Columbo, as well as educational documentaries.
Above all, Don was a man of faith. His love for the Lord and his desire to bless others guided the way he lived. He touched many lives through his kindness, compassion, generosity, and sense of humor. Whether sharing a laugh, lending a helping hand, or offering words of encouragement, Don made people feel valued and cared for. His deep relationship with Jesus Christ gave him strength throughout his life and prepared him for his journey home to Heaven.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy Dunlap; his beloved twin brother, Ronnie Dunlap; and his younger brother, Lou Dunlap.
He will be remembered with love and gratitude by his family, friends, fellow veterans, and all who were blessed to know him. His life was a testament to faith, service, and the enduring power of kindness.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
— Matthew 25:23
