Melody Kaye Fransen

Melody Kaye Fransen, 59, passed away November 9, 2011 surrounded by family and friends at Golden Living Center Covington Heights in Sioux Falls. Melody was born March 22, 1952 to Delbert and Helen (Garrey) Fransen. She grew up in Sioux Falls with her brother Bill and sister Madelyn. She graduated from Washington HS and worked at the Elks Club. Melody spent several years in Deadwood S.D. where she began working with disabled children. She later went on to become a Certified Nurse Assistant and worked at Children's Care Hospital and School here in Sioux Falls. Melody loved animals and would often have stories about how she picked up abandoned pets and gave them new homes and new lives. She loved camping in the Black Hills and being outdoors. After her father Delbert became ill, she moved in with him to become his primary caregiver until he died. As Melody began to struggle with her own illness, her friends and family came to help. Especially long-time family friend Phil Varney whose daily efforts to be by her side made a significant impact on Melody's life. With Phil's' help and generosity she was able to maintain a level of independence that allowed her to remain comfortable in her home. Melody is survived by her sister Madelyn Bowersox (Fransen) of West Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law Janis Neilson of Toronto, Canada; niece Lisa Bowersox of Petoskey, MI; and nephew Matthew (Amy) Bowersox and great nephew Henry of Chicago, IL. Melody is preceded in death by her parents; Delbert and Helen Fransen (Garrey); her brother Delbert "Bill"; and her brother-in-law Terry. In lieu of flowers the family would like to request donations be made in Melody's name to Asera Care Hospice. Visitation will be Friday with family present from 5-8 PM at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home. A private family burial will be held.
