Maxine LaVonne (Schneider) Derby

Maxine LaVonne (Schneider) Derby, 87, passed away January 30, 2011 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. She was born on December 16, 1923 in Matlock, Iowa to Michael and Florence (Druger) Schneider. She spent her childhood in the Sheldon, Iowa area until her family moved in the 1930's. Maxine was the first woman in the United States to receive a membership to the Tile Layers Union. She and her husband laid all the tile at Disneyland. After retiring from laying tile, she held various jobs. Having a big heart, she worked as a care giver in the community, the Salvation Army and at a hospice facility. Maxine will be greatly missed by her family as she was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and canning. She loved to cook, to be outdoors, and she loved her dog: Daisy. Maxine is survived by her children: Michael, Bernard, William, Danny and Debra; ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; significant other: George "Bud" Murray; and a sister: Leona Graff. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Judy, Sharmain and Bonnie; and brothers: Alfred and Michael Jr. Visitation will be 12 PM Sunday at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home with a Memorial Service at 1 PM.
